SIAS and Playtronica’s Biotron: Choosing a Christmas Tree with Plant-Powered Music
At SIAS, we’re always looking for ways to blend nature and technology in our music. When Playtronica sent us their newest invention, the Biotron, we were instantly intrigued. This groundbreaking instrument transforms the natural energy of plants into music, making it a perfect fit for our love of experimenting with unique soundscapes.
Naturally, we had to take it for a spin, and what better way than to incorporate it into one of the season’s most cherished traditions: choosing a Christmas tree? Armed with the Biotron, we headed to Eastern Market in Detroit, ready to find the perfect tree—not just by sight but by sound.
How the Biotron Works
The Biotron is an innovative instrument that captures the energy flow within plants and converts it into musical notes. Each plant’s unique energy signature creates a one-of-a-kind melody. By attaching sensors to a plant, the Biotron measures the subtle electrical impulses it emits and translates them into harmonized sounds. It’s a magical way to connect with nature and discover its hidden musicality.
The Hunt for the Musical Tree
Eastern Market was alive with the festive spirit: the scent of pine, twinkling lights, and the sound of holiday music in the air. But we weren’t just looking for a beautiful tree—we were searching for one that could sing.
We set up the Biotron and began testing different trees, attaching the sensors to their branches to hear what melodies they would create. Some trees hummed soft, soothing tunes, while others surprised us with lively, upbeat rhythms. Each tree had its own personality, expressed through the Biotron’s soundscape.
After testing a variety of trees, one stood out above the rest. Its melody was a perfect mix of whimsy and warmth—a sound that felt like home. It was the clear winner, and we knew we had found our Christmas tree.
